See art and regional history at The Columbus Museum

The Columbus Museum combines American art and regional history. Its visit page lists free general admission and publishes current hours and accessibility information. That makes it a flexible stop for families or for anyone wanting an indoor activity without committing to a ticketed show.

Look up current exhibitions before going. The museum's programs can give you a reason to choose a particular day, while the permanent collection is better for an unhurried visit.

Try the Coca-Cola Space Science Center

For a science-focused outing, the Coca-Cola Space Science Center offers hands-on exhibits, shows, and space shuttle artifacts. Its site lists admission categories and a program calendar. Check both before visiting so you can match an exhibit visit with a show that suits your group. The center can also make a practical indoor choice when the weather rules out a long RiverWalk visit.

What you can bring

The city’s notice lists household cleaning products, lawn and pool chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. It also lists latex and oil-based paint, paint thinners, and furniture stripper, as well as automotive fluids, oil filters, and car batteries.

For electronics, the city names computers, printers, fax machines, copiers, and other consumer electronics. Televisions will not be accepted. Check that exception before loading a heavy set into the car.

Before you go

The Public Works hazardous waste page now shows the October 24 date and lists additional materials, including antifreeze, solvents, acids, mercury, rechargeable batteries, and fluorescent bulbs. Those items don't appear in the October 15 notice, so if one is your main reason for going, confirm it first.

For questions about a particular item, contact the Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission at 706-225-4008 or kcbc1987@columbusga.org.

They really should update the city waste page too. I almost went by the October 10 date when I checked it.

Nina PatelI saw the old date there too. Hopefully they fix it before Saturday so nobody makes a wasted trip.

That’s an understandable mix-up. The city’s October 15 rescheduling notice confirms October 24 as the current date, even though the older waste page still shows October 10.

I've had a jug of used motor oil and an old car battery sitting in the shed. Nice to have a place for both.

The new notice lists automotive fluids and car batteries as accepted items, so both are on the list for October 24.

The drive-through setup was easy last time. I'd get to Pine Grove Way early since they're only open until noon.

Teresa HallGood tip. I went near closing time once and the line was longer than I expected.

Does anyone know if they'll take fluorescent bulbs on the 24th? I saw them on the older waste page but not the new list.

kim_87I'd call Public Works before loading them up. The newer notice doesn't mention bulbs.

Fluorescent bulbs appear on the older waste page but not in the October 15 event notice. We’d call Public Works before bringing them on the 24th.

Too bad they aren't taking TVs. That's the one big thing I've been trying to get out of my spare room.

We hear you, that’s a frustrating exception. The city specifically says televisions won’t be accepted at this event.
